Signature: Workshop Performance, Sunday September 30th

Signature, my rather-ambitious collaborative piece with visual/ media artist Isabella Stefanescu, interface programmer Klaus Engel, and Christine Duncan’s Element Choir is receiving a workshop performance Sunday September 30th at Globe Studios / The Studio Space in Kitchener.

The project (which is a Canada Council commission from Inter Arts Matrix) combines a signature-based installation with an open-ended graphic score tailor-made for improvisational choirs (including Duncan’s group and André Pappathomas’ L’Ensemble Mruta Mertsi).  The installation extracts data (pressure, speed, size etc.) from participants’ written signatures and uses it to manipulate (embed melodies, time stretch, granulate, etc.) the sound of the corresponding spoken name. The choral work incorporates names of the choir members and audience and uses open-ended textural directions to perform similar sorts of manipulations.  There is also a signature-based visual component which is projected throughout the space.   The work is still very much in progress but it should be intriguing nonetheless. The workshop chorus features, among others, some really interesting people including actor/ soprano Pam Patel (from the MT Space’s regular company), composer Juliet Palmer, Meredith Monk collaborator Alex Samaras, quirky singer-songwriter Jessica Stuart, and Mezzo-soprano Margaret Bardos. Admittedly I’m a bit nervous, but also intrigued to see the results and receive feedback.   Here’s a link to my post about the prior workshop.  Below are details about the event:
